Keywords: If you’ve heard of them, you may still feel you are trying to swim in some sort of mysterious world akin to treacle. If you’ve never heard of them, you’re probably thinking “and that’s why I stay well away from trying to take my business onto the Internet and make attempt to make money online – its not for me!”. Well let me help you understand and also give you access to a powerful tool. Keywords are what makes the Internet world go around, or certainly they do in its present guise, driven to the marching beat of the mighty Google.
This is how most of us use the Internet today:
1. An idea, or a question, or something you want to research or problem you want to solve, pops into your head.
2. Rather than turning to the old Encyclopedia Brittanica, or trudging off down the the civic library, you turn to that bland, plastic whirring, annoying machine called the PC, sitting in the corner of your room. It beckons to you “let me see, I can sort this out for you in just a jiffy!”
3. And so you flick the switch, wait for your PC to whir into life, open what we’ve all now come to call our Web Browser, be this Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, or Apple’s Safari, of Firefox or any number of Web Browsers.
4. Then those little magical fingers spring into action and before you know, it you’ve typed in a little statement, a few words that you hope, once you click the Enter button in just a second, will return a page of wonderful results, each one potentially pointing you to a web site that will answer your question or solve your problem.
Well that little phrase those swift and nimble or not so swift and nimble fingers typed into the web browser is called a Keyword. Yes I know its rarely one word, and often 2, 3 or even more, but that combination of words, expressing what you were thinking and what you hope will reveal the solution, is called a keyword. Some call it a keyword phrase and those of the more anal nature refer to it more precisely as a Long Tail Keyword - especially when there are 3 or more words.
So there we are, don’t let anybody bamboozle you with any mumbo jumbo about keywords. They are just the combination phrase you type or I type, or anybody types into Google, or Yahoo, or MSN (Bing) when researching on the net.
So far so good.
So why are they so important?
Well the simple answer to that was revealed in the little description that I provided earlier. It is keywords, that ultimately enable the Search Engines to assemble and show you a list of options to your keyword and thus if you want to take your business or even begin the journey of trying to figure out how to make money working online, you need to understand how to get to the top of the page of results for any given set of keywords.
Still with me?
Now getting to the top of any of these search result pages is what is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO for short and there are lots of aspects to this, but make no mistake, keywords are at the very core of helping you and your site and thus ultimately your product or service, returned on page one of the search results.
So what next?
Well what next indeed. You see Google have provided a free but very powerful tool to help those trying to make money online, but running, building, launching their own Internet based business, to find the really important keywords, with which they can then Optimize their site and so ensure they come up on page one of Google’s or any of the search engine’s results when somebody types in a keyword phrase which is relevant to your offering, your product, your service.
You see keywords are really a method of matching the person with the question or problem they want solving with the solution provider and what a powerful combination that is, which of course is and always has been right at the very core of Marketing.
Now who knows your market and your business better than you, well probably Google actually. They certainly know exactly what the people with the questions and problems are typing when looking for your product or service. Emm! Would be good if we could find out what those keywords were and so optimize our sites in such a way that we were matched together – Yes?
Well by clicking on the link below you will be able to do exactly that:

Once you’ve clicked and opened a new window this is all you have to do:
1. Type in a keyword phrase you think people might type in when researching on the internet.
2. Type in the security characters in the box.
3. Click on “Get Keyword Ideas”
4. Google will then deliver you on screen the volume of people searching for your keyword each month and also provide you with lots of other keyword associated options.
Clearly, by starting here and some really great keywords you have a much better chance of getting onto first page of those results when your potential purchaser decides to sit down, and ask Google or Yahoo or MSN to give them the answer or solve their problem.
All you then have to do, is deliver value and close the sale!
May your success be more than you can hold!

Totally agree keywords=traffic=money
So keywords are very poweful
Keywords on the page + keywords off page SEO = traffic + good ranking = profit.
Reckon it is also important to note that people do a lot better targetting incorrectly spelt keywords or specific keywords in a niche rather than fighting competitors with the same keywords. Make sense?
tnx very informative…

As a small business coach, some of my clients balk when I talk about using pay per clicks, at least until they experience it.
It’s the upfront shock sometimes. The frequent response is: “ahh, it costs $1 for a click through? What would happen if I had 2,000 clicks by tomorrow morning?.”
You see, they fear the pay per click, and other forms of marketing because it might cost them some money. They aren’t looking at the other end of that, “what it costs to acquire a customer.”
If their website conversion is 5% and they paid a dollar per click, then after 20 clicks throughs, at $20 total, they’d have a customer. If what they sell produces a profit significantly higher than $20 they are ahead of the game. In fact, I tell my clients that they SHOULD be asking themselves at that stage, “How many clients do I want to buy” and then get out there cranking that up to buy a ton of them.
But when most websites don’t convert at all, or something less than 0.1%, that would require 1,000 clicks or $1,000 to acquire a client. Again, if this is a $10,000 profit that works. But if it’s a $20 candle we’ve got a problem, and we have something to fix.
The problem is that most will fear that they may get a lot of click throughs rather than just plain figuring this out and making it work no matte what they sell.
a lot of this depends on having a great marketing message and structure on their website so the conversion rates make the pay per click VERY PROFITABLE.
Great Article, Kevin
Absolutely bang on Alan.
