Wolfram Alpha A New Pill That Will Change Your Life
Wolfram Alpha www.wolframalpha.com
What is it?
Wolfram Alpha is an “Answer Engine”. A type of search engine that provides facts and figures instead of a long list of results. I’ve been testing and working with it, but the question is, will it enable Internet Marketers, to make money online, or will it sound the end of the financial success so many have enjoyed and so many have aspirations of enjoying!Unlike traditional search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, which value importance with popularity such as ranking a site according to how many other web pages are linking to it, Wolfram Alpha looks for information in a database of carefully assembled and managed knowledge. With that database, which is growing every minute of the day, it tries to compute a sensible answer to your question, which is why it is described as a “Computational Knowledge Engine” – typical geek speak for our industry as usual:-)
How did we manage without it?
Let’s take a quick example. Say you want to learn about the International Space Station (ISS) which it refers to in its video overview. If you Google “ISS” you get over 25 million results, including Internet Security Systems and International Schools Services, neither of which you are remotely interested in.
How will it change things?
Type “ISS” into its search box and it replies with “Assuming “ISS” is a spacecraft” before providing you with some facts which it has assessed are relevant to that assumption. For instance, the ISS’s current position over the Earth and the date it was launched. It can plot graphs, do computations. It is amazing. Ask about US vs UK and it gives you a table comparing statistics, including geographic size, population density and GDP.
Why is it the next big thing?
Wolfram Alpha belongs to the next generation of “smarter search engines” and this is where we need to be alert as Internet Marketers. These smart search engines are web-based tools that have a grasp of semantics. I guess its closest competitor would be Google Squared which is an experimental search engine that presents results in spreadsheet form. Instead of taking a guess at what you’re looking for based on keywords, semantic search engines try to interpret the meaning of a question and then offer an appropriate answer. This means that we’ll gradually have to change the way we search for information online, shifting from keywords to coherent queries. I hope that has pricked up the ears of all SEO specialists. Because the way we make money online, is going to change.
When can I use it?
It’s ready right now, although the database is still quite sparse and you will often get back the response “Wolfram Alpha isn’t sure what to do with your input.” But as more information is added and it is being added at a phenomenal rate, Wolfram Alpha will soon become the first resource ordinary mortals turn to when they need answers, not search results.
What does that mean for me?
1. I need to be aware of it.
2. I need to use and investigate it further
3. For those who think, “ah….Google will stamp on it” – think again. Last night I downloaded a FireFox free plug in from Google that enables me to run Wolfram Alpha along side the normal Google search – perhaps Google recognize how powerful it is… Now, I’ve spoken to Richard its creator and he’s not made it with any affiliation with Google, but nevertheless….it’s great and has to be acknowledged.
4. Perhaps Google will buy it – who knows.
The Big Question!
How will Wolfram Alpha be monetized?
You see the power and use-ability is quite exceptional and will just get better and as a result more ubiquitous over time. But Google have a truly awesome moneytization engine called advertising and so I will be thinking about how to leverage these types of Answer Engines for Internet Marketing purposes.
Make your success be more than you can hold!

:O Interesting… Google has to be really carefull?
I really don’t think so… I think Google will buy it or associate with it and improove Google search engines.
Either way sounds great.
Rob
I tried to do some research… but think this Engine works for more… especific things.
I think is when people are looking for stuff like from your example… but sometimes we do searches to find what’s on.
It looks cool either way.
Roman
Interesting… where did you find this out from?
What I do think it’s that Google won’t let this pass them. They’ll probably start working together or Google will copy what they think it would work best for them.

Really liked your post… a really good tool that is been created there.
Thanks
Ally
Isn’t amazing the speed of change and dramatic developments that occur with the Internet. Don’t forget to do a search here tps://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12006
this is the free download that will automatically load Wolfram Alpha into your Firefox browser delivering traditional Google and also Wolfram results.
Amazing.
Kevin
Thanks a lot for this thread.
Quite interesting!
Melvin
Quite a piece of information Kevin, thanks a lot!
Didn’t know about this… interesting… :O what’s in there for us in the future????
Kermit
I didn’t know about this new … I don’t know how to put it… “super search tool arm?” ahaha….
It seem quite great but I think Google will find a way to use it for itself.
Jenny
Thanks Kevin
. . . once again the currents shift. There probably never has been a time when the need for constant education and learning is greater than now. And that need will only increase.
What used to be the avant-garde seems to be the new foundation of success. We need to hold back enough to see how it’s all shaking out and forming, but have a constant eye on the horizon and be ready to take action.
Both exciting and frightening.

Thanks Kevin for the nice comments about my Firefox add-on. It’s not actually affiliated with either Google or Wolfram Alpha though. Also, probably a good time to say thanks for the free buttons that you offered awhile back. I used the button for another one of my add-on’s download page. So thanks for that.
