How Big Is The Internet-Really?

It just keeps growing

It just keeps growing

How big is the Internet – really? I mean the more we can wrap our arms around this question collect and understand the data, the more we can truly start to quantify the potential for figuring out how to make money online. These stats are amazing!Well from my recent research I can tell you that in 2008, the mighty Google announced that it had indexed ONE TRILLION web pages. So just go with me on this for a moment – 1million is 1000 x 1000. A billion is 1000 x 1,000,000 and a trillion is 1000 x 1,000,000,000 – silly numbers.

An even more staggering number is that there are around 700,000 new pages being uploaded EVERY MINUTE…

Now, we mustn’t forget that a fair few sites disappear, never to be seen again (well perhaps I over exaggerate, as those of you with experience will know that they all leave a hidden after glow in the what is commonly called the Internet Archive).

When I started tapping out this blog after breakfast this morning, the thought suddenly hit me that 1 or 2 of the sites I have mentioned in my blogs whilst I have been a little more than that “After Glow” could have gone, which is a real shame, as I would not have listed and linked them, had I not thought they were terrific. Just goes to show how much I know. The old adage of my dad springs to mind – “eat the fish and spit out the bones lad..”

Now let me put this another way, using research by Professor Peter Cochrane – the Internet gets 1,000 times bigger every six years. And for every page that was there in 2003, there are a thousand pages now. Mind blowing eh. And in your continual advance to make money, you have a greater opportunity, but need to march forward with a continuing commitment to be really good at what you do, what you offer and what you deliver as the make money online space is so much more crowded.

And so today I going to jump from the big numbers, linking my last point about “crowdedness “and just give you a flavor of some of the breadth of search capabilities beyond http://www.Google.com which now provides about 70%  of all searches on the Internet.

Here goes:

http://www.Google.com According to Nielsen Online Search Share Rankings in Oct 2008, the most recent results I could find, Google has almost 62% of the search engine market and is continuing to grow at a large rate. So my guesstimate of 70% won’t be far off. Google receives more than 100,000,000 (100 million) requests/queries a day.

www.AskJeeves.com and www.Ask.com Created in 1996 by Garret Gruener and David Warthen and was based on a fictional butler called Bertie Wooster from the famous books by P.G. Woodhouse. The idea is to be able to ask questions in every day language and get accurate answers. Not what it used to be compared to the new Semantic babies on the block like www.WolframAlpha.com

www.Technorati.com Designed in 2002 by an open source fan Dave Sifry, this is an amazing engine for searching in what we now all call the Blogosphere. In 2008 it reportedly had over 250 million tagged social media and 112 million indexed blogs.

www.Bing.com With 11.4 percent of the rating from Nielsen Online Search Share Ranking in 2008, the new look and name which has now replaced Microsoft’s Search Engine, Bing offers a significant amount of customization with sites like Windows Live Skydrive and Facebook.

http://uk.search.yahoo.com OK so this is the UK version, my home country, but Yahoo is a prolific creator of Internet content and apps galore and is very very successful with its search engine, ranking 2nd place to Google, but with just 16.9% of the market – just look at the gap and realize how mighty Google really is.

www.AOL.com formerly know as America Online, AOL is part of the Time Warner Group and is in the top five search engines on the Internet. It has a wealth of services ranging from email to instant messaging to parental controls.

And then we have a few more worth checking out without any specific comments from me:

www.Allplus.com

www.ixquick.com

www.MetaCrawler.com

www.DogPile.com

And so the list goes on with AltaVista, Lycos, My Web Search, AllTheWeb, Blog Search Engine and you actually have some of the old guard still hanging in, but substantially re-invented.

So, you want to make money working online….get a sense of the scale, get a sense of the acceleration and stretch, recognize the Internet has only just begun and acquaint yourself with the old barons and young bucks of search engine power.

May your success be more than you can hold!

It’s amazing to think how big the internet has become. When I was reading this I thought to myself – Would we invent something bigger than the internet? Something that could replace it? – To day I could say NO but I guess that is the same feeling that people have when the telephone was invented.

Nice article!

Definetely Google grab the search market BIG TIME. It’s so amazin how they go bigger and bigger in time using a sistem that was already in use… they improve it and made it available for everyone to use. Now the own the market, now there’s a word that almost everyone uses when you need to find out about something: “Google on it!” or “Google it!” So amazin!

When I read things like this and stop to think about what google did I remember how important it’s to don’t take our customers for granted.

Google isn’t the first web search invented, they grab a sistem that was already there and improove it, made better, more accesible and so on.

We must do the same with our OWN products… other wise be sure that somebody else will.

I think that what made Google the boss of the market was the fact that they thought about their potential users (just as you always advice us to do Kevin!)

Think about the people you want to reach it’s definetely the best way to get bigger on your IMarketing business.
